His grandfather taught him one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to learn everything he could about the game. He would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the negative feedback from other people kill his goal of being one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.

Phil started playing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win was not a regular thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to dedication and an immeasurable love for poker. He says that he’s learning every single day and is very abashed about his success. Phil admits to making errors in each game of poker and constantly strives to get better.

Although Ivey has won some big tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
